Stage 1: Improve your pronunciation to be better understood.

1. Learn the 26 English letters and 44 English sounds correctly.

Learn 26 English letters and the sounds of each English letter.
Learn the correct way to pronounce the 24 English vowels by watching the mouth video and the phonetic alphabet of the vowels.
Learn the correct way to pronounce the 20 English consonants by watching the mouth video and the phonetic alphabet of the consonants.
Learn the common mistakes made by non-native English speakers of your country and see if you make the same mistake.
Record your pronunciation and play back to compare it against the teacher's. Play the teacher's pronunciation at a slower speed over and over till you master the sound.
List the vowels and consonants you mispronounce or have trouble pronouncing. You can find a native English speaking friend to help you identify them for you.
Auto-play the trouble sound and practice after the program until you can pronounce them correctly.

Realize that English is not a phonetic language that you can not simply read words as written but there are rules and patterns to help you learn word pronunciations.
Learn the phonics rules which are silent rules, double consonants, two vowels, and ending t and d sounds, in the Rules page.
Learn the major patterns for each English vowel and consonant to master 50% of English word pronunciation.
Learn the minor patterns for each English vowel and consonant to master 30% of English word pronunciation.
Learn the sight/exceptional words for each English vowel and consonant to master remaining 20% of English word pronunciation. You will need to use phonetic scripts to help you remember the pronunciation of these words.

3. Learn and practice word pronunciation after the model's and check your pronunciation with the PPS speech recognition feature or a native English speaker.

Practice words grouped by major patterns for each sound and add trouble words into your own word list.
Practice words grouped by minor patterns for each sound and add trouble words into your own word list.
Practice words grouped by exceptional patterns / sight words for each sound and add trouble words into your own word list.
Use the similar word function to help you master the difference among similar sounds and similar words.
Play teacher's pronunciation at a slower speed to help you practice your pronunciation.
Auto-play the sound and the words at the same time to help you practice and perfect your pronunciation. You can set how many times to play the sound and how many times to play the word.
Record your pronunciation and play back against the model's, and use wave diagram to help you learn where to stress and where not to stress.
Use wave diagram to break down the pronunciation of difficult, long words into pieces to help you master them.
Use the speech recognition feature in the program to check your pronunciation or ask a native speaker to help you identify your trouble words and add them to your word list.
Use Pronunciation Patterns's media player to watch videos, repeat after the videos for words you can hear and say it over and over. If you are not sure about the pronunciation, add the word to your own list.

4. Practice your own word list periodically to help you perfect your pronunciation.

Add trouble words to your word list and practice them periodically until you can pronounce the words perfectly and remove them from the word list afterward.
Export your word list to your mp3 player and practice them anywhere.
Apply your learning to your daily conversation and make conscious efforts to correct yourself when you mispronounce a word.

5. Now, you should have the confidence when you speak English and Americans will understand you better. However, you probably don't sound like an American and don't speak fluently sometimes. Therefore, you are ready for the second stage of learning American spoken English.

I have been completely deaf from the age of 9 (I am now 71). I had a cochlear implant done 12 months ago to restore some of my hearing, and let me back into the world of sound.
