In American English, the words are not pronounced as written. Nevertheless, there are rules and patterns to help you pronounce. In our rough estimation, about 50% of English words follow the major patterns in Pronunciation Patterns, 30% follow the minor patterns, and 20% do not follow any patterns and you will have to memorize their pronunciation. After you select the sound, you can click "Step 3: Learn phonics rules and patterns" to learn the major and minor patterns and exceptions for the sound. You can click the pattern link to list words which follow the patterns. If you have a hard time remembering or recalling the correct pronunciation like me, I highly recommend learning phonics to help you learn pronunciation. If you are poor at spelling, I also recommend learning phonics to help you improve your spelling because it is the most effective method used by American children to learn how to read.
