Xin Wang M.B.A.
I received my Bachelors in Computer Science in 1999 from the
University of North Florida at Jacksonville, FL
and a Masters in Business Administration in 2005 from the
Tepper School of Business
of Carnegie Mellon University
at Pittsburgh, PA, ranked
the number two MBA program by The
Wall Street Journal and
fifteenth by Business Week.
I was a software developer for
IDS Sports from 1997 to 2002, when I was
laid off. I was not able to advance in my career because of poor English
pronunciation, which may have also been the cause of losing my job. (I don't
know for sure, but I do know that my ability to communicate scored the lowest on
every evaluation).
Like many of you, my native tongue is not
English. Even though by 1999 I had been in the US for seven years, my English
pronunciation did not reflect the amount of time I had been exposed to the
language. I was frustrated with the situation and determined to improve my
English pronunciation for various reasons and goals, one of which was to earn an MBA
from one of the top 20 MBA schools.
In 1999 I started working on my English
pronunciation without the help of any software. The results were poor. Books
were useless because I couldn't understand them. First, I tried to learn IPA
(the International Phonetic Alphabet) and reproduce the sounds of words from a
dictionary. It was in vain, however, because I couldn't remember the IPA symbols
for every word and didn't know the correct pronunciation of the sounds. After
learning one word at a time for more than a year, the improvement in my
English pronunciation was not justified by my efforts.
Fortunately, in 2002 I learned about phonics
from an award winning children's TV program,
Between the Lions.
Learning phonics allowed me to read words without looking up their pronunciation
in a dictionary. Even though the program provided some phonics rules and
patterns which helped me read words, it didn't provide enough exercises for
adults seeking to improve and perfect their English pronunciation. Therefore, I
developed Pronunciation
Patterns which uses phonics to teach and/or learn English pronunciation,
helping rule-based learners like myself attain perfect English pronunciation.
(If you don't like memorizing text and you do like math, then you are most
likely a rule-based learner.)
Now you can download
a free copy of the
Pronunciation Patterns demo to determine if my English pronunciation
software can help you. It is my hope that Pronunciation Patterns will
help you improve your English pronunciation and achieve your goals.
